Henry Klutho is Jacksonville's most celebrated architect thanks to his "Prairie School" style and vision for the rebuilding of Jacksonville after the Great Fire of 1901. However, up until 2023, there was no recognition of Henry Klutho anywhere in Jacksonville. In Historic Springfield alone, he designed the Klutho Apartments, the Claude Nolan Cadillac Building, the Florence Court Apartments, his own home, and Klutho Film Studios (which sadly no longer stand). Henry Klutho was also instrumental in the design of Klutho Park (formerly Springfield Park) and many other architecturally significant buildings in Downtown Jacksonville. Because of his significance in Springfield, a group of residents came together to form the Springfield Historic Marker Task Force to recognize him. That marker was installed at Main and 9th, between the Klutho Apartments and Klutho's own home, in May 2023.
Since then, the Task Force, working with the Florida Historical Marker Program under the Florida Division of Historical Resources, is planning additional markers to honor other significant people and places in the Springfield community. These markers tell the stories of the places and people who created the Florida that we all enjoy today. It is the goal of SPAR and the Historic Marker Task Force to share our history with the public.
