SPAR SPEAK” the Weekly Update

Important Notice: SPAR will have elections to the SPAR Board of Directors on January 21 at the General Meeting A reminder that the SPAR General Meeting will be held here at the SPAR Office (1321 N. Main St.) in the large downstairs meeting room at 7:00 PM on Thursday (tomorrow). Notice has been given for several weeks of this coming event; open positions were posted, and very well qualified persons applied. The Current Board has very happily approved the following candidates for the slate that will be presented:

Reverend John Blount - First Baptist Church, Downtown Jacksonville

Rachel Cruz - Springfield Resident, Educator

Stephanie Henry - Wachovia Bank 6th and Main, Business member

Peter King - Springfield Resident, Government related employment

Amanda Searle - Springfield Resident, Real Estate, Community Activist

The first 50 SPAR members in attendance will receive a $3.00 coupon for Uptown Market. Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting.

We are extremely saddened by the sudden death of David Williams of The ARK Lawn Service. Many of you knew him and his good work in the Springfield neighborhood. He also did lawn care for many individual residents here. David will truly be missed. There is no information regarding his memorial service as of now. His family is unable to cover his burial expenses and very much needs our help. John Snyder is collecting for them. You can reach him at 476-3162 if you wish to donate.

Mark your calendars for the April SPAR General Meeting. SPAR will be hosting political candidates so that everyone will have an opportunity to meet them and ask the questions that are important to you.

Lieutenant Steve Gallaher (Zone One) sent the following e-mail:

I would like to ask for your assistance in notifying the residents of the Springfield area that residential burglaries in the area have been increasing recently.  As you know, their assistance in keeping a watchful eye on the neighborhood is a very valuable tool for the Zone One officers to locate and apprehend the individuals committing these crimes.

The most concentrated area is in the B2 sub-sector bordered by Main, 8th, Walnut and 1st Streets, but there have been others outside of this area also.  The residential burglaries within this area have most commonly occurred in the morning hours after the homeowner leaves for the day.  The most common point of entry is by way of breaking a rear window or door.  The most common stolen items are electronics, jewelry, and cash. I believe this is a good opportunity for everyone to be reminded of how important it is to photograph and record serial numbers or to label items with personal identifying characteristics so that they may be identified if stolen.

As a reminder, if they observe what they perceive as a crime in progress they are encouraged to call 911.  If they would like to forward information or if they have questions they may call the non-emergency number 630-0500 or the Zone One Sub-Station at 924-5361.  They are also encouraged to call the non-emergency number to report juveniles that appear to be truant from school.

Celebrate Springfield! Saturday, February 13 beginning at 1:00pm. This is a community wide event for highlighting the Grand Re-opening of Main Street. Previously posted as scheduled for January 30th, the date is now set for Saturday, February 13 due to some final streetscaping. Some of the activities planned are: The SPAR office will open the downstairs “tea room” and have a “Tea & Trifle” time beginning at 12:00; a motorcade of city officials, Springfield revitalization partners and community groups - beginning at 1st Street at 1:00, and a Springfield Neighborhood Summit. Community groups and businesses are encouraged to bring in calendars, brochures and fliers of their services and activities to the SPAR office for distribution at this event and for SPAR to make available to residents, visitors and prospective residents.

The Emergency Services & Homeless Coalition ("ESHC") is conducting a "Point in Time Count" on January 25, 2010, to update the information on the homeless population in downtown Jacksonville.  Those demographics have changed in recent years with the two largest groups now believed to be veterans and displaced families.  The count will involve taking surveys at various downtown locations, including St. John's Cathedral. If you are interested in participating, please contact Dawn Gilman at ESHC (384-1361, ext. 4231), or Robert Hyde (632-9104, ext. 21). Volunteer training is scheduled for Friday, January 15, at 2 pm at Goodwill and Tuesday, January 19, at 8:30 am at First United Methodist Church.

Thank you all for bringing your recyclable paper to the bin located in the parking lot across the street from the SPAR building on the west side of the 1300 block of Main St. Instead of tossing out your old 2009 calendars, recycle them! You don’t even need to remove the staples. Please bring all your old calendars, greeting cards, newspapers, magazines, school and office papers, and junk mail to SPAR’s Paper Retriever bin. It is set well back from the road, so you will probably want to drive in to the parking lot. Support Springfield programs and the environment! No cardboard please, as it can’t be used to make newsprint. You can support your community by bringing your paper to this location only.
